Busy Isn’t Productive: Why Spinning Your Wheels Isn’t Moving the Needle

Have you ever had one of those days where you worked non-stop… and somehow got absolutely nothing done?

You answered emails. You returned calls. You solved other people’s problems. You even skipped lunch because you were “so busy.” And yet when the day ended, you stared at your to-do list thinking, How is it possible that I crossed off exactly zero things?

Welcome to the modern productivity trap: being busy instead of being productive.

Somewhere along the way we started treating “busy” like a badge of honor. People practically compete over it.

“Oh my gosh, I’m SO busy.”

“Same! I’m crazy busy.”

“Yeah, I barely had time to breathe today!”

Congratulations… but did anything actually get done?

Because busy does NOT equal results.

The truth is, many of us spend our entire day reacting instead of intentionally choosing where our time goes. We answer every email immediately, jump into every “quick question,” and put out every fire that appears.

Before we know it, we’ve spent the whole day working hard… but not working on the right things.

So how do you stop spinning your wheels and start making real progress?

Let’s break it down.

Takeaway #1: Busy Does NOT Equal Results

Let’s say it louder for the people in the back.

Busy. Does. Not. Equal. Results.

You can run around all day long and still accomplish very little if you’re focusing on the wrong tasks.

Many people spend their time doing the easy, quick tasks because they feel good to check off the list. Answering emails. Organizing files. Cleaning up spreadsheets. And while those things may need to be done, they are rarely the tasks that actually move the needle forward in your career or business.

Productive people ask a different question:

“What is the best use of my time right now?”

If the answer is writing the proposal, planning the project, or having the difficult conversation… that’s where your time should go.

Not rearranging your inbox for the 17th time.

Takeaway #2: Stop Being a Firefighter

One of the biggest productivity killers is what I call the firefighter approach to work.

Now don’t get me wrong — I love firefighters. My husband is a retired firefighter, and they are heroes. (and super hot!)

But as a time management strategy? Not so great.

Firefighters spend their time putting out emergencies. And unfortunately, many people run their entire workday the same way.

Everything becomes urgent. Every interruption becomes a priority. Every request feels like it has to be handled right now. Before long, your entire day is spent reacting instead of proactively focusing on the things that actually matter.

Here’s the key mindset shift:

You are choosing where your time goes.

Even when it doesn’t feel like it.

You can communicate priorities. You can set boundaries. You can schedule focused work time.

And when you start doing that, something magical happens…

You actually get meaningful work done.

Takeaway #3: If You Want to Go Deeper, Listen to the Podcast

Mallory Herron and I recently recorded a full episode of Breakthrough with Mallory and Julie diving into this exact topic.

If you’ve ever ended the day feeling exhausted, frustrated, and wondering where your time went… this episode is for you.

🎧 Listen to the full episode of Breakthrough with Mallory and Julie wherever you get your podcasts.

Because at the end of the day, success isn’t about doing more things.

It’s about doing the right things.
